Interface responsiveness

Buttons, links, form elements — any active page elements must respond to user actions. This is expressed in a change in appearance: a change in the color of the frame or background, the appearance of a glow or shading effect, a change in the cursor icon, text color, the appearance of text underscores, etc.

This is necessary so that users are not distracted by thoughts like “does this button work?”, “has the button already been activated or do I need to press again?”, etc. Any distractions interfere with the main thing: studying and immersing in the content of the page.

This is how different button effects look like.
This is how different button effects look like.

There are 3 kinds of effects:

  • :hover — hovering the mouse cursor.
  • :active — left-click.
  • :focus — the focus of the text field to start typing or open a drop-down list.

Active elements are also considered blocks, when hovering over which the pointer cursor appears (a hand with an outstretched index finger). Pointer cursor means that the element is clickable, therefore, it should respond by changing the design when the mouse cursor is hovered.
